Einig Vaterland? 31 Essays zur deutsch-deutschen Geschichte // One Fatherland? 31 essays on German-German history

To this day, the history of the Federal Republic, the GDR and reunified Germany is often told and written about separately. At the same time, the worlds of imagination and experience in East and West Germany continue to diverge, perhaps even more so than a few years ago. This book aims to counteract these centrifugal forces.

The basic idea behind the 31 essays collected in this volume is to understand the key developments in the state and politics, society and economy, culture and science, mentalities and historical perceptions since the Second World War as phases of a shared, albeit largely antagonistic, German-German history. Only in this way can we succeed in deciphering the historical grammar that still determines the conflicts between ‘West’ and ‘East’ in everyday life.
